3D Smurf Movie – Will You Go?

September 1st, 2009

I know I will be first in line but how many others of my vintage will be attending? After originally being forecast to be released in 2008 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of smurfs the new 3D Animated Smurf movie is due to be released in the US  on Dec 17th, 2010, according to IMDb. This news has delighted smurf fans who have been eagerly awaiting a smurf movie since it was first rumoured in July 2005. Rumours are what this story is full of;  from live action combined with 3D animation,  the possibility of John Lithgow voicing Gargamel to a smurf triology – no-one seems at all certain of what this movie will consist of.  But one piece of hard evidence found by Australian smurf fanatic, Brad, points to the 3D animation part being completely true. The following images were found on the display boards of the HappySmurfDay Euro Tour.

There is also footage in a news report video on France3.fr which shows some of the animation in production. The last photo is a still from that footage.

Photo source: BradThe next big question is then: “When will the smurf toys and merchandise be out for myself and fellow collectors to buy?” They released a 50th anniversary plush in the US at Toys R Us but they have not hit the stores here in Australia yet. We’ve seen a few beanie baby type smurf toys  available at Myer. JayJays and Target both have had smurf t-shirts in their line in the last 18 months. I’m hoping as the movie draws nearer that more smurf merchandise will hit the shelves here in Australia. So will I be at the smurf movie?  Of course…..I will be the one holding the giant smurf plushie and humming the smurf song: la la la la la la sing a happy tune.  Hope to see you there :) Smurf ya later….

Natalie Portman’s Smurf Phobia

August 30th, 2009

Natalie Portman SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Natalie_Portman.jpg

Well we all know there’s phobias for everything under the sun; spiders, change, death, heights to name a few. But seriously, a fear of smurfs? Though, to Natalie Portman’s credit,  she does say it was Gargamel that scared the ka-smurfs out of her.

In a recent interview by her Brothers co-star, Jake Gyllenhaal, she laughingly admitted her fear.

“PORTMAN: [laughs] I remember as a kid being really scared of the Smurfs.

GYLLENHAAL: The Smurfs?

PORTMAN: Because that bad guy, Gargamel, was so terrifying. I was scared of a lot of cartoons. I’m kind of wussy like that.

GYLLENHAAL: That’s interesting because you seem so fearless.

PORTMAN: Really?

GYLLENHAAL: Yeah. Looking at all these things that you’ve done and contributed to the world so far, I would have thought that the evil wizard Gargamel would’ve been something you could have very easily stepped over.

PORTMAN: Thank you for saying that, but I’m far from fearless. I’m afraid of everything. But maybe when you’re afraid of everything, it sort of seems like you’re scared of nothing.”

It kind of makes you wonder what other stars are afraid of.

Latest Smurf Toy Acquisition – Punch Out Book

August 23rd, 2009

a-smurf-village-punch-out-book Finally back into buying a few more pieces for my collection. So here’s a pic of my latest buy, “A Smurf Village Punch Out Book”. A bargain at 99c ($US) plus postage.

I’m hoping to eventually collect all the smurf colouring in books and activity books there are. Most of these were produced by Random House in the 80s so can be a little hard to source, especially in good undrawn in condition. Currently I have around 3-5 of these books. Pictured in the gallery below is a sample of some of the books available.

Smurf Toy of the Week – PVC Papa Smurf (2.0001)

August 19th, 2009

2-0001a - PapaThe German company, Schleich, have been producing PVC smurf figurines since 1965. They first produced the Papa smurf (Papaschlumpf) in 1969. He was produced every year until 1972 and then re-realeased from 1976-1999.

Interestingly enough the Papa smurf toy, although being numbered 2.0001, wasn’t the first of the PVC smurfs to be released. Normal smurf (2.0002), Gold Smurf (2.0005) and Prisoner smurf (2.0010) were the first 3 smurfs released in 1965.

These figurines are made from PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) and measure approximately 5cm in height. The base material is generally either blue, white or red. They were produced in both Germany and Hong Kong.
